Christmas In Paris by Bradley Hanson

Based solely on the limited evidence of the last 3 years, we are in the new habit of traveling internationally every other holiday season. We were last in Rome and Naples, Italy at the end of December in 2019, weeks before it became THE Covid-19 hotspot in the world.

This winter, we were in Paris for 4 days, (with one day visiting the surreal Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France) from Christmas Eve until the morning of the 29th. Mont Saint-Michel was a 4.5 hour bus ride from Paris, but is definitely worth the trip. I first learned of it from the 1990 movie “Mindwalk,” starring John Heard and Sam Waterson. The day after we left, Paris reinstated an outdoor mask mandate as Omicron rages across the world. France requires all visitors to be fully vaccinated get a vaccine pass to visit museums and restaurants, and the US requires proof of a negative Covid-19 test 24 hours before arriving in the US. We passed the Covid-19 tests in Paris required for our return to the Minneapolis airport, which was reassuring.

We were traveling with our 8 year old autistic genius son, Oliver, which both changed the activities we did while altering our timeline. It also required us to be extremely flexible with our choices, as well as the duration in any of our desired destinations. He is a very creative kid who will only eat about 4 things in the world, and none of them were convenient in Paris (except cold milk), so he lost a lot of weight on our long days of walking.

Oliver also is a creature of deep obsessions. We never know what is coming next, but we know from experience it will be both interesting and deeply pursued, as well as vehemently enjoyed. On this trip, Oliver became enamored with pigeons, which are in great supply. He feed them, loved having them gather and fly around him, and, at one point, tried to get one to jump onto his arm. Oliver also began sketching in earnest. We got him a few sketchbooks and he started a book of his drawings, appropriately named “Book Of Pigeons,” which helped the reader through the process of drawing pigeons, part by part, beginning with the feet. (Video below paragraph text)

We hope Oliver will always remember this trip, particularly because it allowed him to finally get some closure on another lifetime obsession of his: the Mona Lisa. This painting is hanging in the Louvre Museum, and is obviously a huge part of the draw to many of it’s visitors based on the line required to see it. Pro-tip: Musee D’Orsay (Orsay Museum) nearby is a much better museum if you are interested in more modern art and has a wonderful collection of the French impressionists.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed in Paris, particularly if you are claustrophobic and crowd-averse. It’s a large city with a cafe on literally every corner, and it’s like watching a sunset where you keep thinking it can’t get any better and then it keeps happening. It takes a while to get your bearings because there are no tall buildings, though the Eiffel Tower is often visible depending on where you are. Montmartre is probably the densest and the most interesting neighborhood, directly at the top of a deceptively steep hill beneath the obligatory Sacre-Cour cathedral. Loaded with shops and restaurants, it’s also loaded with people. (See link to video below).

Hard-wired to always have a camera with me, I remembered to be a parent first and a photographer second. I brought one camera and one lens, a 35mm. I watched a lot of amazing moments appear and evaporate right in front of my eyes. I saw a man walking that was a dead ringer for what I imagine Jean-Paul Sarte might have looked like at age 30. My hands were usually full of other things I had to carry, including baguette sandwiches, cappuccino, and an umbrella from the ubiquitous daily rain. I wanted to be as present as possible, occasionally catching myself taking photographs more for my memory enhancement than pushing myself creatively, the latter being my usual motivation, as well as using my phone to record videos of our son Oliver being Oliver.

For those who haven’t had the experience, Paris is still the most beautiful city I’ve been to, bustling and full of vibrant people who’s formality is occasionally mistaken for rudeness to the untrained eye. Even with my minimal French vocabulary, we found everyone to be extremely helpful and friendly. My rudimentary French was not an issue in any way until the very last morning, when our plane ticket didn’t specify which of the three terminals was required for our flight home. The Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris is enormous, so I’ve learned a good pro tip is knowing exactly where to be dropped off to shorten the distance you have to run to the gate…

The last thing I learned in 2021: If you can actually taste the food on the airplane, you definitely don’t have Covid-19!

Gina And Amanda's Elegant And Snowy Winter Wedding At The Hewing Hotel In Downtown Minneapolis by Bradley Hanson

This was my last wedding of 2021 and easily one of the best.

Gina and Amanda got married at the elegant Hewing Hotel in the North Loop neighborhood of downtown Minneapolis. It was such a joy. They were amazing people that clearly and a deep connection. Gina is from Boston, Amanda from Minneapolis. They met in September of 2019 and survived 6 months of long distance relationship until the pandemic forced them to quarantine together in Minneapolis. A few days after a heavy blizzard that began melting almost immediately, they were married on a moderately mild December day in Minneapolis. They are both special ed teachers in Boston, which perfectly suits their intelligence and their caring and giving nature.

The Hewing Hotel in downtown Minneapolis is one of my favorite venues because of the timeless design and beautiful light.

From Gina and Amanda: “We decided on a Sunday brunch wedding because we are both sober, vegetarians, and love brunch, so it felt very us!”

Wedding planning and floral design by Ashley Skeie | Wedding And Event Planning

“Bradley - I’ve been trying to craft a perfect response but the pictures have left me speechless. I know when I thought of pictures for our wedding, your work has completely blown every expectation I had out of the water. There are absolutely priceless pictures of not only us as a couple but of us with people that mean so much to us. I cannot thank you enough for doing your job and your passion so beautifully. We have only scratched the surface in the words of gratitude we truly have for you. In the weeks after our wedding we have received countless compliments on the incredible pictures but also from our family and friends that were able to speak about how kind you are. There are truly no words I could attempt to string together that could convey how proud we are to tell and show people who our photographer was. I cannot wait to relive that day through your work in the years to come. Forever grateful.” - Gina and Amanda

Winter Family Portrait Session At Harriet Island On The Mississippi River In Downtown St. Paul, MN by Bradley Hanson

I photographed a portrait session for Lauren and her daughter a few days ago when it was about 25F degrees outside. My wife Jackie made some beautiful birth and family portraits for them last year, but she is taking a break from photography and referred the client to me. We started as the sun was setting, but in conjunction with nap time, it wasn’t ideal timing for her daughter, Austin, but we forged ahead. We met at the Lilydale Yacht club at the bottom of a steep hill. My plan was to make the photographs in the beautiful woods and bike path nearby. Once we got to the intended location, I realized the light was harsh, so I suggested Harriet Island, two miles toward downtown on the Mississippi River. We worked in short bursts, stopping to warm up in the car. I’m extremely pleased with the results, and so was Lauren, and grateful to my wife, Jackie, for the referral.

Another One Of My Wedding Photographs Was Featured On World's Best Wedding Photos by Bradley Hanson

Wedding reception toast at sunset in Sonoma, CA

One of my images was featured by the website World’s Best Wedding Photos, along with other wedding images that are on the theme of silhouettes. This image was something I saw while digging through my camera bag at a wedding reception in wine country of Sonoma, CA. Of all the photographs taken during the reception, this one not only best communicated the celebratory nature of the wedding, but was new territory for me visually, although I have a number of silhouettes in my portfolio. Maya and Vilas' Autumn Wedding At Mill City Museum And McNamara Event Center In Minneapolis by Bradley Hanson

Maya and Vilas had a two day Indian wedding in Minneapolis. Day one was at the lovely and historic Mill City Museum on the Mississippi River near the Stone Arch Bridge, and Day two was at the massive McNamara Event Center in Minneapolis on the University of Minnesota campus. They live in New York, but got married here because this is where Maya grew up.

The McNamara Event Center was completely transformed by the wonderful Reena Maheshwari of Kahani Events. You can see more of her work at https://www.kahanievents.com.

Andrea And Kearney's Autumn Wedding At Mill City Museum On The Mississippi River In Minneapolis by Bradley Hanson

Andrea And Kearney's wedding took place at various locations around Minneapolis over the course of 4 days. Day 1 was an evening get together on the top deck at the Minikahda Club, Day 2 was a sunset event at the Kearney home in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis near the Walker Art Center. Day 3 was a full day, beginning with getting ready at Lake Of The Isles, then a wedding ceremony at the oldest church in Minneapolis, Our Lady Of Lourdes, a mere two blocks from the Mississippi River on Main Street, then a reception at the wonderful and historic Mill City Museum. Day 4 was a breakfast hangout at Andrea’s parents home.

There are far too many favorite images to share them all here. All of the images below are from Saturday, the third day and only full day of photography. Rather than choose only favorites, I’m sharing the images that best give one a sense of the joy and excitement of what it was like to be there. I typically make multiple revisions of the gallery before and after posting, and I expect this trend to continue.

Aniko And Aiden’s Beautiful Summer Wedding At The Minneapolis Event Center/Grand 1858 On The Mississippi River by Bradley Hanson

Aniko and Aiden originally came to me over two years ago, a referral from a friend’s wedding I photographed in 2016. I photographed them in late 2019, a few months before the pandemic hit. Like most of my 2020 clients, they moved their date to 2021 to insure that their out of town family and friends, mostly coming from New York and Florida, could attend their wedding in Minneapolis, MN.

It was, as has been the trend lately, a steamy, humid Minneapolis summer day. Despite that, it was an absolutely beautiful wedding, and the proximity of the Minneapolis Event Center/Grand 1858 to the Mississippi River helped moderate some of the heat. Planning and design was by the wonderful Lauren Goldfarb, and she made the daily run like a Swiss watch. Everyone had fun and it was an honor to be there to document it.

Photographic highlights from this lovely summer wedding are below. Clicking any image will bring it up at a much larger size and in its original format.
