Elegant, Understated Minnesota Wedding At St. Paul College Club On Summit Avenue by Bradley Hanson

I always love shooting at the elegant St. Paul College Club on stately Summit Avenue in Saint Paul, MN. Erika and James were a breeze to work with; ideal clients. Interested in reality, they went about their business and let me photograph the day as it unfolded, focusing on candid moments. After seeing each other for the first time that day, they read their wedding vows to each other in private, which was a beautiful moment full of joy. Erika shared the history of their courtship below.

My side of our story began before James and I ever met.

“In the early summer of 2018, I learned that my estranged father, who lived across the country, had advanced early-onset dementia. That season was full of heartbreak and complicated grief. But in the middle of it all, I made myself a promise: I would not let this pain define me or rob me of love and joy. I remember saying to myself, “Erika, if you let this ruin your chance at happiness, I’ll never forgive you.”. Albeit heavy, this is real life.

That promise sparked something in me. I began to reflect on the kind of partner I hoped to one day find, and I even wrote out a list of qualities I dreamed of: playful yet grounded, adventurous yet content with lazy days, intelligent, kind, thoughtful, supportive, confident without arrogance, able to make me laugh, and above all—someone who would truly listen.

Fast forward to January 2019. My father had passed away, and I was between jobs, not actively looking for anyone. Still, to pass the time, I sometimes swiped on Bumble—the dating app where women send the first message. James and I matched in late February. I nearly let the match expire, but James used his one daily time extension to keep the door open. That simple gesture felt genuine, so I decided to reach out.

Our first messages were lighthearted. He liked that I wrote about playing Super Smash Bros. and eating chicken wings, and I loved his obvious affection for his cat and his interest in nature. After a few weeks of chatting (and a couple of canceled attempts), I finally worked up the courage to meet him in person despite some intense anxiety.

On March 7, 2019, we met at the Neighborhood Café in St. Paul. Over dinner, I learned that James was finishing his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, and I assured him that I had just secured the start date for my new job. I also learned that James was, quite literally, a bee scientist—which felt serendipitous, given that we had met on Bumble. From that very first date, we found comfort and joy in each other’s company. We didn’t want the night to end, so we made plans for our second date the very next day.

Exactly one year later, the world shut down. COVID-19 forced everything into fast-forward. A few months into lockdown, we decided to move in together, beginning what we jokingly call our “never-ending sleepover.” We crammed into a 1.5-bedroom apartment with our three cats and shared my full-sized bed, figuring out how to live as partners while navigating a global pandemic. The mystery of new love faded quickly—but what was revealed instead was even more extraordinary: our love endured and deepened. Though it hasn’t been without its ups and downs, our love has only gotten better over the years, aging like a fine wine.

In September 2023, we bought our first house together. A beautiful maple tree stood tall in the front yard, and a month later, James proposed to me beneath its branches. Since then, life has been full of milestones and joy—adopting our sweet dog, Henry, taking unforgettable trips, and planning the wedding we’ve been dreaming of.

Looking back, I can see how that promise I made to myself in 2018 came full circle. The grief didn’t break me. Instead, it opened me up to love—and to James, who embodies every single quality I once wrote on that list. I have truly found my happily ever after.”

Meghan And Brian's Elegant Black And White Downtown Saint Paul MN Wedding At The Lowlands by Bradley Hanson

I’m caught up with 2023, my busiest year in a decade, and finally able to share one of the best weddings of the year. The groom, Brian, is a well-known photographer in Atlanta, specializing in head shots. The bride, Meghan, is a talented makeup artist in Atlanta. We met for coffee before the wedding while they were in the Minneapolis area and clicked immediately, no pun intended.

Their wedding was unique in a number of ways, but most notably, all of the decor, from the tables to the walls, invites, clothing and details, was black and white. Normally wearing one of my many blue suits, I got a black suit specific to this wedding so I could remain as inconspicuous as a 6’2” photographer can be.

Coordination and design was done by the talented Heidi Almendinger of Jenna Culley Events, and hair was by the always stellar Hair By Sitha, who I’ve had the good fortune of working with probably a dozen times over the past couple years alone.

Everything took place at a new, modern and minimalist wedding venue right on the Mississippi River on the outskirts of downtown Saint Paul, MN. I really loved the venue and can’t wait to photograph there again. The only bump in the road was torrential rain akin to what one might expect in Florida that scuttled my grandiose plans for photographs of the couple during the cocktail hour, but the timing was nearly perfect as it occurred after photographing the family, moments before the start of the ceremony, which took place indoors anyway.

The gallery images below were chosen not only from the pool of favorites, but to give a sense of what it was like to be at The Lowlands on that day. In the spirit of their chiaroscuro contrasty design intentions, I’ve chosen to only share B&W images.

Abbey And Mitchell's North Loop / Northeast Minneapolis Minnesota Wedding at Hewing Hotel And Bauhaus Brew Labs by Bradley Hanson

Abbey and Mitchell started their day near their Mississippi River apartment at the lovely Hewing Hotel in North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis, with their wedding ceremony and reception at Bauhaus Brew Labs in Northeast Minneapolis. They were very sweet and obviously very connected to each other. Abbey’s dress was one the best I had seen in a while.

According to Abbey: “The North Loop and northeast being near and dear to us. We’ve lived in North Loop the entirety of our relationship and spend a lot of time making memories with friends in NE (Bauhaus in particular being our favorite spot), so incorporating those spots was important to us. We wanted our wedding to be authentically us, and laid back in a way that made our guests feel they could be themselves.”

“After meticulously researching wedding photographers, we landed on Bradley given his documentary style, natural editing, and his professional training and experience. Unlike many photographers we considered, Bradley is a true student of photography and a master of his craft. He was a pleasure to work with, making sure to understand our vision, needs, and plan for our wedding day. We adore our photos, received them (over 1,000 of them) within one month. Our guests continue to comment on how impressed they were by Bradley and that our photos are the best wedding photos they’ve ever seen. We don’t disagree.”

Kelsey and Chase Autumn Riverfront Elopement In Minneapolis by Bradley Hanson

Kelsey and Chase had a very quiet elopement. I met them at the Hewing Hotel in downtown Minneapolis (North Loop) to photograph them getting ready. We then went straight to the government building for their vows outside with the judge.

While photographing them on a bridge at Nicollet Island Inn, Chase bumped into the group of bicyclists he regularly rides with, a complete coincidence and entirely unplanned.

After the ceremony, Kelsey and Chase hosted a casual brunch at LynHall on Lyndale Ave in Minneapolis that included great food and Jenga! No dancing or traditional reception events, just a nice meal with friends.

“We are a Tinder love story, and had our first date walking around St Anthony Main in 2015 - so it’s especially fun that we had some of our pics from the wedding day there! Chase proposed to me on the Stone Arch Bridge - he made me bike there with him so he had an excuse to bring a backpack because the ring box wouldn’t fit in his pocket. As far as planning the wedding - just that we wanted it to be intimate and low-key and couldn’t be more thrilled about how the day turned out.”

Now this is the proper reaction to seeing your partner on your wedding day!

Vanessa And Alex's Timeless Outdoor Seattle Wedding At Dunn Gardens by Bradley Hanson

I just photographed this wedding at Dunn Gardens in north Seattle a few weeks ago. This was the last frame, just after the sparklers burned out. The teal blue vintage Citroen DS originally belonged to AC/DC singer, Brian Johnson.

From the bride: “Alex and I met in August of 2019, from breweries, concerts, and camping we quickly realized there was something special there. The second week into dating I asked Alex if he would meet me at Pike Place Market to see Head and the Heart perform- not knowing that at the time, he left a wedding in Spokane (on the opposite end of Washington State), drove through the mountain pass and waded through the thick crowd to find me. The best concert with my favorite person.”

Sarah And Peter's Lake Minnetonka Summer Boat Wedding In Minnesota by Bradley Hanson

Sarah and Peter got married on the Bella Vista cruise ship on Lake Minnetonka, after getting ready with the wedding party at the nearby Guest House in Excelsior on the main strip there.

From Sarah: “We have a love of travel and have learned to be spontaneous with it with Peter’s tricky pilots schedule. We take advantage however and whenever we are able. Our first trip ever as a couple after 1 month of dating was driving through a blizzard a few hours to Chicago to go to the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit. Next up was a week in Negril, Jamaica on a beach like lazy sea turtles and cliff jumping. And following that we packed a singular backpack, headed to the airport for our 5 year anniversary to jump on any flight stand-by that we’d be lucky enough to sit Delta One cabin. We ended up on the most romantic 48 hour trip to Paris and back. We landed in a rain storm, hopped on a bus straight to the Eiffel Tower and as we climbed the stairs amongst the first to arrive, the sun peaked through the clouds rewarding us for our journey. Museums, walking the hidden streets, lovely coffee, and home again. Knowing we have all our lives to add to our list of adventures.”

Shortly after seeing their wedding images, Sarah and Peter left this review for me:

”Our experience with Bradley Hanson was exactly what we had sought out for our wedding. Besides being a perfect gentleman and a calm presence on our stressful excitable day, it was as if he disappeared into the rays of sun and captured the best moments of our day without barely even being noticed. His photos delicately but most ardently tell the story of our day, the hidden moments in between, and we are overwhelmed with joy and the love we see in each shot. Bradley’s unique vision for variety, use of lighting and photographic intent are unparalleled. A subtle genius.”

Wedding reception toast at sunset in Sonoma, CA

One of my images was featured by the website World’s Best Wedding Photos, along with other wedding images that are on the theme of silhouettes. This image was something I saw while digging through my camera bag at a wedding reception in wine country of Sonoma, CA. Of all the photographs taken during the reception, this one not only best communicated the celebratory nature of the wedding, but was new territory for me visually, although I have a number of silhouettes in my portfolio. Yes, It Is Possible To Get Married During The Pandemic In Minneapolis And St. Paul Minnesota by Bradley Hanson

In March of 2020, I was about to photograph a wedding in Negril, Jamaica. At that time, the Covid-19 pandemic was clearly snowballing to the point that flights began to be restricted. Those clients eloped in their living room in Vermont, while the rest of my clients began looking for alternative dates for 2021. Almost all of the 2020 weddings either canceled or rescheduled their weddings for mid 2021 and it was clear that 2020 would be not only a year we’d never forget, but a rocky road for restaurants, small businesses and the self-employed like artists and craftsmen.

I just received this review on Google:

“Planning a wedding during a pandemic is definitely difficult. Having vendors who do their best to make your life easier, like Bradley did, becomes top priority. From start to finish, I cannot express how much we appreciated Bradley and his quick wit and talents. During our engagement photoshoot it became evident that he was willing to go the extra mile to make sure the photos reflected our personalities and our relationship as a whole, venturing to a nearby park so we could include our passion of canoeing. He was such a sport about any of our crazy ideas. I never had to worry about communication or updates from Bradley, he was very proactive. Knowing how busy our wedding day would be, he knew to ask ahead of time what photos were a priority to us. His eye for a great shot was the icing on the cake!

On top of his obvious skill behind a camera came what I would argue is even more important than that: his ability to make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. Not everyone enjoys getting their picture taken, but you would never guess that from the interactions our small guest list had with him. Everyone enjoyed having Bradley around, he was a fantastic addition to our small family gathering. We are so appreciative of Bradley and his capturing our day so perfectly. With a quick photo turnaround we were able to relive the day sooner than we had even anticipated! I could not recommend Bradley highly enough. You cannot go wrong with this very talented photographer!” - Elizabeth and Thad

The current rules for weddings in Minnesota, as of this writing, are much less restrictive than they were even a month ago. During the current Polar Vortex, no one is getting married outside here, so we will ignore those rules, but for indoor weddings that are serving food and drinks, the only limitation is that masks and social distancing are required, and the number of guests is limited to 50% capacity.
